That’s the least like the others. If you still trust me, try Churn Rate.

Beautiful! It was refreshing (pun intended) to read after the bleakness of The Reactor

Thanks for reading and commenting! Yes - The Reactor is pretty bleak & Churn Rate is a bit of a downer as well (but in a good way, I hope). This one proves that it’s possible for at least one of my stories to have a happy ending! Really appreciate you dropping by and checking out the wares.

I haven't read Churn Rate just yet, but it's on my list.

I really like your writing style. It feels like a mirror held up to a future we seem to be headed to, but will hopefully avoid.

Thanks, that’s very kind, and just what I’m aiming for - a plausible extrapolation of where things seem to be headed (with a little dramatic flair, hopefully).

This story is amazing. I'm gonna be honest though, the first parts were a bit too technical for me, like there were too many technological terms, if I can call them that. But as it progressed, I found it more and more fascinating and the big reveal was awesome, if only for the fact that I never would have expected it! Connecting with a fridge! That was something! Thanks for a great story.

p.s. Is "mandatory relationship optimisation audit" tech speak for sex? 😀

Thanks for reading and your honest feedback. This was the first story I wrote for a long time and it’s the one I’m least happy with. I had a lot of ideas I wanted to stuff in and a lot of them don’t really serve this story & your feedback is consistent with that. Glad you stick with it and got to the end.

Mandatory Relationship Audit isn’t sex - the idea is that everyone is so monitored and optimised in this future that the algorithms are always judging everything about their lives, including personal things like relationships. If you look at the way people use apps like instagram to portray a curated, “best” version of themselves— or the way people on this app contort themselves to try to please the algorithm — we’re kind of half way there.

Thank you so much! My first goal in joining Substack was to find at least one person who would appreciate what I’m shooting for with my stories, and I consider that aim now to be achieved. I could not have wished for a more attentive, perceptive—and above all—*generous* reading of my piece. Thanks for the repost, and I have one more published piece if you’re curious to check that out sometime. I’ll make sure to read your work now too—I’m sure it’s awesome given what good taste you obviously have 😉. Thanks again, Hammond.
